Listen:
Christian Wirth, saxophones soprano, alto, baritone
The Quatuor Habanera first met Louis Sclavis in November 2000 at the Festival 'Écouter Voir' in Lyons. The idea of inviting Louis Sclavis to make up a quintet for their third recording came naturally. Their previous recordings were devoted to contemporary music and to works of the Romantic period. Alexandros Markeas, Alain Berlaud and Yassen Vodenitcharov, long-standing associates of the Quatuor Habanera, soon joined in this collective project. These composers, who are themselves improvisers, thought out a programme of works that would enable Louis Sclavis to contrast and compare his world with that of the Quartet. Each of the scores was created with the idea of enabling him to extemporise his part above those of the four saxophonists. Thus, generally on the clarinet but also sometimes on the saxophone, he provides melody, support, accompaniment, sound effects and rhythm, and punctuates, imitates or comments on the written parts played by the other four musicians.

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
